The Story of Indonesian Sumatra Coffee
The Indonesian island of Sumatra has a perfect climate for quality coffee beans. The balanced soil, combined with the location of the islands at the equator, creates a wonderful tropical climate for quality coffee beans.
There are three main varieties of coffee beans sourced from the growing regions of Sumatra, Indonesia: Mandheling, Lintong and Gayo. Mandheling grows in the north and is considered by many to be the best coffee beans Sumatra produces.
There's a reason why Indonesian Sumatra coffees are great
What gives these beans their flavor is the wet hull processing method. In Bahasa, this process is called "giling basah" .
Wet hull means the beans retain a higher level of moisture than other methods. While many of the top coffee-growing countries dry their beans to around 11% residual moisture, the giling basah method dries coffee beans to 50% moisture.
Sumatra has a humid climate, which leads to the formation of beans with wet shells. Farmers generally have less than 4 hours of drying time per day. This method gives the coffee beans a unique flavor.
